“….Make the guest experience better by helping hosts to be better “
= Question | = Answer
Q: What was your motivation to write the book?
A: I was looking for a creative / business project and decided to do what I know instead of inventing something I would have to research.
Q: What gave you the idea to write the book?
A: It’s actually who gave me the idea…my property manager of the Paso Robles house. We were having some housekeeping issues. I stressed to Linda that the house had to be in really good condition before it get turned over from a guest and from housekeeping. I told her to read my reviews from the other properties – she did and replied to me “You are a star” – and I thought, well kinda I am. Why not share my secrets and make the guest experience better by helping hosts to be better.
Q: How did you approach writing the book?
A: I didn’t look at any competitive books, blogs or websites. I didn’t want to be dissuaded by thinking that there’s plenty of good books out there or taint my concept and be influenced in any way by other material. Only after my ‘final’ version did I peek at what others had and was happy to see that my book was a good compliment to what’s out there. I love the industry and many books that are on the same topic are also worth a read.
Q: What kind of questions from guests scare you?
A: Anything about the TV or Roku. I don’t watch TV and don’t know why people would be on vacation at one of my properties and sit in front of the TV.
Q: What was the biggest disaster in one of your Airbnb’s?
A: Toilets backing up.
Q: What was most rewarding request you fulfilled for a guest?
A: We brought in flowers for a guy’s fiancé so that she would be surprised – it was a bear to get the logistics down and also to screen him properly so that we were sure he was not some stalker and the flowers would actually be a nice gesture. Turns out the guy who contacted me was legit and the fiancé was thrilled.
Q: What basic advice do you have for a new host?
A: Read the 10 Step to Hosting Success book and take baby steps. Hire a property manager if self-management is too daunting.
